Your hair length or hair type doesn't really matter. As long as your hair length is about 6 inches or longer. When my boyfriend did my dreadlocks, we were questioning if mine would lock because I have very thin/causcasion hair. But it all worked out perfectly in the end.

You can do your dreads at home. It's not necessary to go to a hairstylists. My boyfriend went to a hair stylists, but he did my dreads for me right in his living room. The best way to go about making dreads is using Beeswax. And, when you want to wash your hair, you must use RESIDUE-FREE shampoo.

On more tips for dread formation, and how to create them, and maintain them, go to this site. it's amazing. It has products, and other things that you can buy to make your dreads.

p.s. good luck with your dreadlocks!!I want to spot dreadlocks. Is there I way I can do them for the first time at home, well that is?
I've had dreads for over 2 years now... and i LOVE them! they aren't hard to care for, as long as you know what you're doing. (and i have caucasian hair). if you want to be sure they are really done correctly, I'd go to a salon that specializes in dreading. However, they are not hard to do yourself. I'll post a couple of links for you, the links have instructions on how to care for them, AND how to make them at home. Don't be scared, just do some research, and you'll end up with great dreads that you LOVE. (PS. you DO wash dreads, I wash mine 2-3 times weekly) BTW... you could always get ';dread extensions'; just to try them out.
Oh, I would really watch out with dreads.

It's permanent, difficult too clean and dandruff will spoil everything! It's almost impossible to wash your hair, except for the cleaning-lotions, that dont do their job well.

Please gather all the information you can, experiences from others are best.

I'm sure there are good results to be haved, but you don't want to ruin your hair and have to shave it of (like a friend of mine did).
